How do I measure my Lederhosen size correctly?
The waist circumference is the decisive measurement. Use a tape measure at the point where the Lederhosen should sit — just above or slightly below the navel depending on the desired wearing height. This figure in centimetres roughly corresponds to the trouser size. At 86 cm waist circumference, for example, size 48 or 50. Different manufacturers have slightly different charts, so always check the specific size table.
What does a classic men's traditional costume consist of?
The classic men's traditional costume consists of Lederhosen, a traditional shirt (white or checked, always tucked in), a waistcoat or Janker, a leather belt with a traditional buckle, traditional socks or Loferl, and Haferl shoes. A Charivari on the fly is optional but very traditional.
What is the difference between short Lederhosen and Kniebundhose?
Short Lederhosen end above the knee with a fringed hem and are the most popular style at Oktoberfest — comfortable, robust and practical. The Kniebundhose ends just below the knee and closes there with a waistband and buttons. It looks more formal and suits more traditional occasions such as church festivals, processions and balls.
Which shirt goes with which Lederhosen?
White always works. Checked patterns work well when the colours of the check pick up or contrast with the leather colour without competing. A dark checked shirt with light brown Lederhosen looks balanced. A patterned shirt and a heavily patterned waistcoat together usually look restless — one of the two should be plain.
Is deerskin really better than cowhide?
Better is relative. Deerskin is softer, lighter and moulds to the body faster. It develops a characteristic patina over time. It is, however, more delicate and more expensive. Cowhide is cheaper, more robust and holds up better at folk festivals. For occasional wear, cowhide is perfectly adequate and a smart choice.
Can I wear a waistcoat and Janker at the same time?
No. Waistcoat or Janker — one of the two, not both layered. In warm temperatures keep the waistcoat. When it gets cooler, put on the Janker instead of the waistcoat, not over it.
What is a Charivari and do I need one?
A Charivari is a traditional decorative pendant fastened to the fly of the Lederhosen. It consists of coins, small charms, teeth or claws from game animals. In Bavarian traditional culture it is genuine heritage with meaning. It is not essential, but wearing one with high-quality Lederhosen completes the traditional look.
How do I care for my Lederhosen properly?
Never in the washing machine. Air them out after the festival. Blot stains immediately, do not rub. Apply leather conditioner once per season. Hang or lay flat for storage, never fold. For stubborn stains, take them to a leather specialist.
