Frequently Asked Questions
What is Kirchweih?
Kirchweih (also known as Kerwa, Kirchtag or Kilbi) is a regional folk festival in Bavaria, Franconia, Austria and Switzerland that originally celebrates the anniversary of the consecration of a village church. Kirchweih festivals are deeply rooted in local traditions and differ greatly from big-city folk festivals like Oktoberfest.
What is the difference between a Kirchweih Dirndl and an Oktoberfest Dirndl?
At Kirchweih, more traditional cuts, quieter colours and longer styles are more appropriate. Mini Dirndl often look out of place at traditional Kirchweih festivals. At Oktoberfest, the range is broader — from mini to maxi, everything is worn.
Which Dirndl length suits Kirchweih?
Midi from 70 cm and long Dirndl from 90 cm are the recommended lengths for Kirchweih. For more festive occasions like Trachtenbälle and Heimatabende, lean towards longer styles. Mini Dirndl are not ideal at traditional Kirchweih festivals.
Do I have to wear Trachten stockings at Kirchweih?
Not mandatory, but traditional. At Kirchweih, Trachten stockings — white knee socks with a border or half-length Trachten stockings — are worn much more often than at Oktoberfest. Anyone wanting to look traditionally dressed should wear stockings.
Which brands are especially recommended for a Kirchweih Dirndl?
For Kirchweih we recommend Krüger, Stockerpoint and especially Spieth und Wensky. The traditional house from Kaufbeuren is particularly well suited to traditional occasions like Kirchweih thanks to its classic fabrics and authentic patterns.
