Women's stockings for folk costume – which type suits when?

Stockings are often an afterthought when putting together a Dirndl outfit. Yet they can determine the overall impression. A fresh, white pair of knee-high socks with a short Dirndl is a classic of folk costume – and almost universal at the Oktoberfest. The wrong pair stands out just as much as no pair at all.

White knee-high socks – the Trachten classic

White knee-high socks are the most frequently seen stocking accessory with folk costume. They suit short and mid-length Dirndl, look beautiful combined with ballerinas or Trachten pumps and make a clear statement: this is Bavarian folk costume, and I stand by it.

Cream is a softer alternative to pure white. With Dirndl in earthy tones, beige or green, cream looks more harmonious than white.

Support stockings for long folk festival days

Support stockings with light compression (15–20 mmHg) are designed for people who stand and walk for many hours. The Oktoberfest is exactly such an occasion. Support stockings reduce heavy legs and swelling and do not harm the look. Modern versions are available in fine, skin-tone shades that are barely visible under the Dirndl.

Patterned Trachten stockings

For those who want more personality in their stocking choice: patterned stockings in diamond shapes, edelweiss borders or cable patterns. They suit traditional, strongly patterned Dirndl particularly well and give the look an extra folk costume character.
