The Cannstatter Wasen is not the Oktoberfest, even though it is often called that. Stuttgart has its own style, its own beer tradition, and its own way of wearing Tracht. If you are heading to the Wasen, know this: a dirndl is not required here the way it is in Munich, but it is very welcome, and the visitors who wear Tracht usually get it right on purpose. We show you which dirndls we recommend for the Wasen, which colors and lengths work, and what to keep in mind about Stuttgart's own traditions.

COLORS FOR THE WASEN
Stuttgart likes it classic and clear.
Unlike the Munich Wiesn, where color trends have grown bolder and bolder in recent years, the Stuttgart Wasen style stays fairly classic. The safe classics, navy, bottle green, wine red, burgundy, mustard yellow and terracotta, work especially well here and never look dated in Wasen photos.
Also popular here are traditional dirndls with a folk look, slightly rustic, with authentic details like edge embroidery or embroidered aprons. Stuttgart guests often value traditional aesthetics more than the newest color trend out of Munich. Less successful are very light pastels (they look washed out in the tent) and neon colors (they clash with the Wasen mood).

One dirndl. Several festivals.
The Wasen dirndl also works at the Wiesn, at the spring festival, or at a church fair. With a different apron and blouse, one piece becomes a whole wardrobe.
MIDI OR SHORT
Which length suits the Wasen tent?
At the Cannstatter Wasen you mostly see midi dirndls between 65 and 75 centimeters. It is the most practical length for long beer tent evenings, since you sit comfortably on the benches and can dance without constantly having to cover up. Midi is the default, and it is also the length Stuttgart regulars choose most often.
Short dirndls are not rare at the Wasen, but they are noticeably less common than at the Munich Wiesn. Stuttgart leans a bit more toward the traditional midi look. Long dirndls you will mostly see at Trachten events outside the tents, since they are impractical inside a festival tent. Our recommendation: midi in a classic color, in a quality that holds up through several Wasen visits.

Dirndls at the Cannstatter Wasen
No, there is no official dress code at the Wasen. Dirndls are very welcome but not required. You will also see plenty of visitors in jeans and a blouse in the tents, especially on weekdays. On weekends and Wasen party nights, noticeably more guests wear Tracht, because it fits the mood and makes for better photos. If you are choosing Tracht for the first time, you are in very good company at the Wasen.
Festival-season outfits work well at the Wasen: jeans with a checked blouse, a leather jacket and comfortable boots are a tried and tested compromise between casual and festive. Many Stuttgart regulars switch between Tracht and a festival look depending on the evening. What matters is sturdy clothing. Wasen beer tents are crowded, hot, and after five hours of dancing not the place for light or delicate fabrics.
Midi (65 to 75 cm) is the dominant length at the Cannstatter Wasen and also our clear recommendation. It sits well on the benches, allows for dancing, and looks festive in photos without seeming staged. Short dirndls are around too, but less common than in Munich. Long dirndls are impractical in the tent and better suited to formal Tracht events outside the festival tent.
Style-wise, the Wasen is a bit more traditional and classic than the Oktoberfest. In Munich, a strong trend toward very colorful, experimental dirndls has developed in recent years. At the Wasen, most visitors stick to classic colors and traditional cuts. That does not mean modern dirndls do not work at the Wasen, but a classic dirndl in navy, bottle green or wine red is usually the safer choice here.
Stuttgart has a few very good Trachten shops, but the selection is often limited to a few brands and a narrow price range. Online you get far more models, colors and sizes across different price ranges, you can compare at your own pace, and you have a 14-day return policy in case the dirndl does not fit perfectly. We recommend ordering at least two weeks before your Wasen visit, so there is time for an exchange if needed.
