Less suited for: events with a stricter dress code or traditional character, church festivals, conservative Trachten processions, church weddings. Here the knee-length is the more respectable choice.

The knee-length breeches (Kniebundhose)

The Kniebundhose ends just below the knee and is the more traditional option. It has a long history as a classic garment of the Bavarian and Austrian Alpine region. The knee-length gives the look more dignity and traditional substance.

Well suited for: traditional Trachten processions, weddings as a guest, church festivals, Oktoberfest, more formal evening events. The knee-length is the safer all-rounder that suits almost every occasion.

Which leather truly holds up? Cowhide vs. deerskin

The leather is the heart of every Lederhose. It determines how it wears, how it breaks in, how long it lasts and what it costs. The difference between leather types is considerable.

Cowhide (Rindleder)

Cowhide is the most robust and most commonly used leather for Lederhosen. It's hardwearing, easy to care for and withstands very long periods of use. Cowhide Lederhosen are generally cheaper than deerskin models and make complete sense for most wearers.

Important to know: cowhide breaks in more slowly than deerskin. In the first few wears, a new cowhide Lederhose may feel somewhat stiff. That's normal and not a sign of poor quality. After several wears it moulds to the body shape. More on this in the breaking-in section.

Deerskin (Hirschleder)

Deerskin is the premium leather par excellence. It's softer, lighter and more breathable than cowhide. A deerskin Lederhose feels more comfortable from the very first moment and breaks in much faster. It conforms to the body shape quickly and gets better and better with time.

The price is higher, a good deerskin Lederhose costs significantly more than a cowhide model. But it's worth it: anyone who wears a Lederhose regularly and values comfort and a high-quality look will be happier with deerskin in the long run.

Synthetic leather and mixed products

There are cheap Lederhosen made from synthetic leather or leather-mix fabrics. They're less expensive, but not comparable to genuine leather quality. Synthetic leather doesn't break in, doesn't adapt and wears noticeably worse, seams give way sooner, the material cracks at flexion points. If you want a Lederhose that lasts more than one season: genuine leather, always.

Brown Lederhose, the Bavarian classic

Brown is the original colour of the Lederhose. From light tan to rich walnut or dark brown: brown Lederhosen stand for Bavarian tradition and are the most common colour at every folk festival.

Light brown Lederhosen look fresher and more modern. They pair well with blue and red checked Trachten shirts and white stand-collar shirts. Walnut brown models are slightly more distinguished and traditional. Dark brown to near-black looks particularly elegant and suits evening events well.

Black Lederhose, modern and versatile

The black Lederhose is the more modern alternative. It looks more elegant, less folksy and is particularly attractive for men looking for a Lederhose that also works outside of the folk festival, at a town festival, Trachten concert or more formal evening event.

How should a Lederhose fit, the fit guide

Fit matters more with a Lederhose than with almost any other garment. A badly fitting Lederhose shows immediately. A well-fitting one is comfortable to wear and lasts better, because the leather wears evenly.

The right fit: checklist

• Waistband: The waistband sits at the waist, not on the hips. The Lederhose is worn higher than modern trousers. With braces it pulls upward, that's correct.
• Crotch: The crotch shouldn't hang too low, otherwise the leather slaps uncomfortably when walking. It should sit comfortably without pinching.
• Thighs: Enough room to walk and sit. The Lederhose doesn't sit tight at the thigh, this isn't a jeans cut.

In Bavaria, absolutely. A Lederhose at a wedding is a completely acceptable, indeed tradition-conscious choice for the groom, best man and guests. A few points matter:

• Kniebundhose rather than short Lederhose, the knee-length looks more formal and appropriate.
• The Lederhose should be in good condition. Stains, bleached patches or worn edges look out of place at a wedding.
• With a white stand-collar shirt and waistcoat the look is complete and wedding-appropriate.
• A Janker as an outer layer makes the look even more formal.
• Colour: brown, walnut or dark brown for a wedding. Black looks modern but brown is the more traditional choice at a wedding.

Lederhose for the Oktoberfest, what you need to know

• Short or knee-length: Both are perfectly normal at the Oktoberfest. Short is more mobile, knee-length more classic.
• Light brown is the classic: Light brown Lederhose is by far the most common sight at the Oktoberfest.

Breaking in a Lederhose, how long does it take?

Breaking in a new Lederhose is not a myth but a necessity. Cowhide models in particular sit stiff and snug in the first few wears. That's normal, it's actually a sign of genuine leather.

• Wear it: The simplest method. The more often you wear it, the faster it adapts. After three to five wears the difference is clearly noticeable.
• Wear it at home: Simply sit on the sofa at home in the Lederhose, watch TV, move around. Body heat and movement speed up the process.
• Leather care products: Massage in specialist leather fat or balm to make the leather more supple. Apply sparingly.
• Never break in wet: Some people recommend wearing the Lederhose wet. This can damage the leather and lead to uneven stretching. Not recommended.

1. Don't wash, clean: A Lederhose never goes in the washing machine. Never. Wipe with a slightly damp cloth, treat stains immediately.
2. Air out: After every folk festival, hang on a hanger, don't fold and put straight in the wardrobe.
3. Leather care: Apply leather fat or balm at least once per season. The Lederhose becomes more supple and more resistant to moisture.
4. Moisture: If the Lederhose has got wet, let it dry in a cool, well-ventilated place. No hairdryer, no radiator, that makes the leather brittle.
