Wool waistcoat

The wool waistcoat is the most formal option. Fine wool fabrics in dark green, black or dark grey look excellent under a white stand-collar shirt. Wool waistcoats are the first choice for weddings, Trachtenumzüge and any occasion where a polished appearance is called for. In autumn they are also warmer than fabric or leather options.

Fabric waistcoat

Fabric waistcoats in cotton or blended materials are the most versatile models. Lighter than wool, less rustic than leather – they sit in the middle and work equally well for Volksfeste and weddings. Many models feature embroidery or traditional Bavarian patterns that give the look a regional character.

Colours and combinations – what goes with what?

The colour of the waistcoat is guided by the Lederhose and shirt. A few tried-and-tested combinations:

• White Trachtenhemd, dark green waistcoat, brown Lederhose: a classic. The green of the waistcoat bridges shirt and Lederhose perfectly.
• Checked shirt (blue-white), blue or grey waistcoat, light brown Lederhose: a more modern, understated look. The waistcoat picks up the shirt colour without matching exactly.

How to wear a Trachtenweste correctly

The waistcoat always goes over the Trachtenhemd and is left open or closed depending on the model and preference. For button waistcoats, all buttons should be fastened – an open button waistcoat looks careless.

The cuffs of the Trachtenhemd show below the waistcoat. This requires a long-sleeve shirt. A short-sleeve shirt under the waistcoat does not create a complete look. That is the most important practical tip when buying a waistcoat: always try it together with a long-sleeve shirt to see the intended result.

The Lederhose is of course also visible beneath the waistcoat – the braces lie on top of the waistcoat, not underneath. This is a common mistake: braces belong over the shirt and over the waistcoat, visible as a style element, not hidden beneath.
