Short Lederhosen, Bermuda or Knee-Length?

The most important decision when buying is the length.

Short women's lederhosen: End at the upper thigh, often cut like hot pants. Modern, light and good for warm festival days. Very attractive combined with a tracht blouse or a dirndl top.

Bermuda lederhosen: End about a hand's width above the knee, look a little more covered but stay summery.

Knee-length lederhosen: End just below the knee, enclose it and sit there especially traditionally with lacing. More structured in look and therefore better suited to more festive tracht occasions than the short version.

Real Leather or Faux Leather?

On the material question there is no right or wrong, but clear differences.

Real leather: Durable and high-quality, it adapts to the figure over time and sits pleasantly on the skin. Suede is soft and supple and especially flatters a pear-shaped figure, while nubuck has a matte surface and looks casual. Over the years the material develops an authentic used look. A little more care-intensive and more expensive to buy, but cheaper in the long run.

Faux leather: Cheaper, easier to care for and available in more colours, often visually a deceptively close match to the original. Less authentic in feel, but a good choice for occasional use.

On care: do not wash lederhosen in the washing machine, but air them regularly to avoid odours. Stains can often be removed with a leather brush, and for a full clean a professional leather cleaning is recommended.

What Do You Wear With Women's Lederhosen?

A tracht blouse, a dirndl top, a plain T-shirt or a satin top all go very well with women's lederhosen. A tracht bodice emphasises the waist, high-waist models look especially flattering, and elaborate embroidery is a current trend.

Add tracht stockings or Loferl and matching shoes: tracht sneakers, ankle boots for relaxed styles or high heels that visually lengthen the legs.
