THE FIRST DIRNDL OF THE SEASON
The spring festival is different from the Oktoberfest.
The spring festival, whether in Munich, Stuttgart or at the Cannstatter Wasen, marks the start of the Tracht year for many people. Unlike the Oktoberfest in autumn, you can go for lighter fabrics, fresher colors and elegant summery cuts here. We show you which dirndls really work in April and May, which colors match the spring mood, and which midi dirndls we recommend to our customers for the spring festival 2026.
OUR SPRING SELECTION
Midi Dirndls for the Spring Festival

SPRING COLORS
Fresher, brighter, friendlier.
At the spring festival you can finally wear colors that would feel too bold in autumn. Pastel shades like dusty rose, sage, soft lilac, lavender and muted yellow work especially well in the spring light. They look fresh without seeming silly. Light blue tones and teal also look more alive in the April and May daylight than under October tent lighting.
Classics like navy, bottle green or wine red always work, of course. They are not tied to a season. What you should avoid in spring are very heavy velvet looks or very dark color combinations, such as an all-black dirndl with a black apron. They read as too wintery in spring and pull you out of the seasonal mood the spring festival is meant to celebrate.
HIGHLIGHT I
Dirndl Shanaya

Our favorite for the spring festival. Midi length, light fabric, fresh spring colors. Sits comfortably all day and still looks good in photos come evening.

MIDI IS THE DEFAULT
Why midi suits the spring festival especially well.
The midi dirndl at 65 to 75 centimeters is the obvious choice for the spring festival, for a very practical reason: April and May are often warm during the day but still cool in the evening. A midi gives you the freedom to wear a light cardigan during the day without disrupting the look, and it is long enough that you will not freeze if the temperature drops in the evening.
Short dirndls work at the spring festival too, of course, especially in summery weather, but they make you dependent on the weather in April and May. Long dirndls are usually too formal for the spring festival. They suit evening weddings or the Oktoberfest finale better. If you are looking for a dirndl for the spring festival, reach for midi in a fresh color. It is the most flexible and practical choice for the changeable spring weather.
HIGHLIGHT II
Dirndl Harper

The light all-rounder for mild spring days. Well cut, fresh colors, fair workmanship. For anyone looking for a first good spring dirndl.

Dirndls for the Spring Festival
Fresh pastel shades like dusty rose, sage, soft lilac, lavender and muted yellow suit the spring mood perfectly and look vibrant in daylight. Light blue tones and teal work just as well. Classics like navy, bottle green or wine red always work too. Avoid very heavy velvet dirndls and all-black combinations, as they look too wintery in April and May.
The main difference is lightness. For the spring festival we recommend lighter fabrics, brighter colors and summery, elegant cuts. A pure Oktoberfest dirndl in heavy fabric and dark color can look too heavy in spring. Conversely, a good spring dirndl often works at the Wiesn in autumn too, once you pair it with the right apron and blouse.
Yes, especially in warm weather. But keep in mind, the weather in southern Germany in April and May is unpredictable, and a short dirndl leaves you dependent on warm evenings. A midi dirndl gives you more room to move. You can wear a light cardigan during the day without the look suffering, and you will not get cold as quickly in the evening.
No, there is no official dress code, neither at the Munich spring festival nor the Stuttgart one. Tracht is very welcome but not required. Many visitors wear dirndls because it fits the mood and makes for better photos. If you decide to wear a dirndl, you have much more freedom in color choice than at a wedding, and a bit more than at the Oktoberfest in autumn.
Yes, absolutely. A good midi dirndl in a fresh color works at the spring festival, the May festival, Munich's Tollwood, at summer festivals, garden weddings, and later at the Wiesn too. With a different blouse and a different apron, the dress looks different every time. That is exactly the advantage of a well-made dirndl over a cheap fast-fashion piece.
