TRADITIONAL WEDDING

Marrying in traditional dress: more than a trend.

A traditional wedding in Bavaria isn't a trend but a lived tradition. Choosing to marry in traditional dress is a deliberate decision for rootedness, a sense of home and a style all of its own. But guests and bridesmaids need the right dirndl too. Too casual looks disrespectful, too flashy steals the bride's thunder. We show you what works for every role at a traditional wedding: colour, length, blouse and the rules worth knowing.

COLOURS FOR WEDDINGS

The most important rule: no white.

White and cream are reserved for the bride. That is the one firm rule at every wedding. Very light pastels that look almost white are risky too. What works instead: Navy is the classic wedding guest colour. Burgundy and wine red feel warm and festive, especially at autumn weddings. Dark green is trending in 2026 and suits outdoor locations perfectly.

For bridesmaids a coordinated look has proven popular: all in the same colour (sage green, dusty pink or dove blue are favourites) but with different dirndl cuts. That gives harmony without uniformity. Or the reverse: same blouse, different dirndl colours from one colour family.

Dirndl Länge Hochzeit Guide

THE RIGHT LENGTH

A wedding demands length.

At a wedding the long dirndl from 85 centimetres is the most festive choice. Especially at church ceremonies and formal receptions it sets the right tone. Midi dirndls from 72 centimetres are the more flexible alternative: they work in church, at the reception and on the dance floor equally well.

Mini dirndls under 60 centimetres are out of place at a wedding. That applies to guests as much as bridesmaids. For the bride herself we recommend a long dirndl in white or cream, ideally with elaborate embroidery and a lace blouse that completes the look. More on this in our guide: marrying in traditional dress.
