A Trachten wedding is not a trend in Bavaria, it is a living tradition. Anyone who marries in Tracht is making a conscious choice for down-to-earth values, a sense of home, and a very particular style. But guests and bridesmaids need the right dirndl too. Too casual reads as disrespectful, too dressed up steals the bride's spotlight. We show you what suits every role at a Trachten wedding: color, length, blouse, and the rules worth knowing.

COLORS FOR THE WEDDING
The most important rule: no white.
White and cream are reserved for the bride. That is the one fixed rule that applies at every wedding. Very light pastels that read almost white are risky too. What works well instead: Navy is the classic among wedding guest colors. Bordeaux and wine red look warm and festive, especially at autumn weddings. Dark green is on trend in 2026 and pairs beautifully with nature-inspired venues.
For bridesmaids a unified look has proven itself: everyone in the same color (sage green, dusty rose or dove blue are popular), but with different dirndl cuts. This creates harmony without uniformity. Or the other way around: the same blouse, different dirndl colors from one color family.

THE RIGHT LENGTH
A wedding calls for length.
At a wedding, the long dirndl from 85 centimeters is the most festive choice. It sets the right tone, especially for church ceremonies and formal receptions. Midi dirndls from 72 centimeters are the more flexible option: they work in church, at the reception and on the dance floor alike.
Mini dirndls under 60 centimeters are out of place at a wedding. That goes for guests as much as for bridesmaids. For the bride herself we recommend a long dirndl in white or cream, ideally with elaborate embroidery and a lace blouse that completes the look. More on this in our guide: Getting married in Tracht.

Dirndls for the Wedding
The bride wears a white or cream dirndl, preferably in a long style from 90 cm. High-quality embroidery, fine fabric and a white lace blouse are part of the classic bridal dirndl look. The dirndl as a wedding dress is a genuine tradition in Bavaria, not a passing trend.
Bridesmaids avoid white and cream, since those colors are reserved for the bride. A coordinated single-color dirndl in a shade like sage green, bordeaux or dove blue is popular. Alternative: matching blouses with different dirndl colors from one color family.
In Bavaria and Austria, a dirndl as a wedding guest outfit is entirely acceptable, even without an explicit Trachten theme. In other regions of Germany, when in doubt, ask the couple. A festive midi or long dirndl in muted colors is always an elegant choice.
The groom wears long lederhosen or Krachlederne, a white or light blue Trachten shirt, a Trachten jacket or blazer, and Haferl shoes. A Trachten suit with knee breeches is the slightly more formal alternative.
At least six to eight weeks before the wedding, so there is time for an exchange or alterations. For custom pieces or special requests, plan for three to six months. In the run-up to the Oktoberfest season, popular models in sought-after sizes sell out quickly.
