Dirndl bra – why it is indispensable

A good Dirndl bra is one of the best purchases you can make for your folk costume outfit. That sounds like an exaggeration, but it is not. The difference between an ordinary bra and a specialised Dirndl bra is visible from the front and the back – and it determines whether the overall outfit looks coherent or whether small details stand out and distract.

What makes a Dirndl bra special?

A Dirndl bra is designed for a specific situation: wearing under a bodice with a deep or wide neckline. This leads to specific construction features:

• Flat back: No wide back band with hooks and eyes that becomes visible or digs in under the bodice. Dirndl bras often have narrow, invisible back closures or a transparent back.
• Transparent or no shoulder straps: Shoulder straps should not show through under the bodice or stick out at the sides. Dirndl bras have transparent straps or are worn without straps.
• Softly shaped cups: The cups must not extend above the bodice edge. They are constructed to stay below the top of the bodice while still filling the neckline beautifully.
• Push-up effect: The deep Dirndl neckline is flattered by a subtle push-up effect. This is not compulsory, but it is more common in Dirndl bras than in regular bras.

Which Dirndl bra for which neckline?

• Deep, wide neckline: A balconette or half-cup bra with a light push-up is ideal here. It lifts the bust and fills the neckline attractively.
• High, closed neckline: A simple T-shirt bra or a bra with transparent cups is perfectly sufficient. No push-up needed – that would be excessive.
• Laced neckline: Here the cup height is particularly important. A bra whose cups become visible above the lacing hole disrupts the look considerably.

Dirndl bra sizing
