Washing lederhosen - we'll show you how!

Had a blast at the Wiesn and now your leather pants show it? Lederhosen are tough, sure, but they still need some TLC to keep looking their best. Can you wash them? And what should you watch out for when cleaning them? We’ve got the essential care tips and tricks to keep your Lederhosen in top shape for years to come!

Wiesn Time is Lederhosen Time

Each year, just in time for Oktoberfest, traditional clothing comes out of the closet. Dirndls and Lederhosen become part of the daily outfit and give people an incredible sense of community. Men wear Lederhosen and checkered shirts, while women shine in stunning Dirndl styles.

But women are now often spotted in Lederhosen too, paired with a traditional blouse. After days of partying, dancing, and lifting steins, your leather pants will definitely show some wear and tear. While patina and signs of use add character, if stains or odors go too far, it's time for a proper clean.

Care Instructions for Your Lederhosen

With the right care, your Lederhosen can last for years. Leather is high-quality and requires more attention than your average garment. Through tanning, animal hide becomes durable clothing material, valued for being:

  • Supple
  • Breathable
  • Relatively firm
  • Resilient
  • Water-resistant

Depending on the leather’s quality, prices vary greatly. That’s why proper care is essential. And not all leather is machine-washable. Leather types differ in their treatment and care. Common high-quality types include:

  • Nappa leather
  • Suede (pig leather)
  • Cowhide
  • Goatskin
  • Exotic leathers (e.g. reptile)

Can You Wash Lederhosen?

Yes, you can clean Lederhosen — and in some cases, even machine wash them! Whether suede or smooth leather, your Lederhosen are valuable and need gentle treatment. Here's what to keep in mind:

  • Wash similar colors together
  • Secure loose buttons and appliqués
  • Pre-soak dirty leather and gently brush with special leather detergent
  • Check washability before proceeding

Washing Lederhosen by Hand

  • Use ~½ bottle of leather detergent in 10–15 liters of water
  • Max temp: 35°C
  • Soak for 30 minutes
  • Hand wash and rinse with clean water

Machine Washing Leather Pants

  • Use gentle or wool cycle with max. 35°C
  • Use ~½ bottle leather detergent
  • Spin only manually
  • Note: Machine washing removes patina
  • Caution: Dark leather may discolor

Drying Your Lederhosen

  • Lay flat on a towel and rotate regularly
  • Dry in a low-humidity space
  • Never use a dryer or direct sunlight
  • Brush nap leather (e.g., nubuck) after drying
